Red brick vs AAC blocks: which is better for your Pune home?

Weight, strength, insulation, speed and cost compared, so you can choose the right wall material for your house.

Walls make up a large part of any building, so the material you choose affects cost, comfort and even how much steel your structure needs. In Pune, the two most common choices are traditional red clay bricks and AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) blocks.

Weight

AAC blocks are far lighter. Typical AAC density is around 550–700 kg per cubic metre, compared with roughly 1,800–2,000 kg for clay brick. Lighter walls put less load on beams, columns and foundations, which can reduce structural cost in multi-storey buildings.

Speed of construction

One AAC block (600 × 200 mm face) replaces several bricks, so walls go up faster with fewer joints and less mortar. That saves labour time on site.

Heat and sound

The air pockets in AAC give it better thermal insulation than clay brick, which helps keep rooms cooler in Pune summers. AAC also offers reasonable sound insulation.

Strength and fixing

Good-quality red bricks are strong and familiar to every mason. AAC is strong enough for walls in framed (RCC) buildings, but heavy items like kitchen cabinets and TVs need the right anchors.

Cost

Per block, AAC costs more than a brick, but you need far fewer blocks and less mortar and plaster. Overall wall cost is often similar, with AAC saving time.

Our recommendation

  • Choose AAC for most RCC-frame homes and multi-storey buildings: lighter, faster and cooler.
  • Choose red brick where load-bearing walls are needed or where you prefer a traditional finish.
  • Either way, use good mortar mixes and proper curing. Workmanship matters as much as material.
